Photographers are often creatures of habit, often shooting the same locations time and time again. This may be because that location is close to them or they feel that it’s a place they get their best photographs. It may just be as simple as they really like the place. I shoot London more often than anywhere for all of the above reasons. It’s a big city though with many things to see and an ever-changing skyline so I’m not often taking the same photographs. I do really enjoy visiting other cities too, and try to do so as often as I can. There isn’t one city that I’ve been to take photographs that I’ve said I’ll never revisit, yet here I am questioning that very statement. Next week I revisit one of the best locations I’ve ever been to, Valencia. More specifically Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences. So if it’s one of the best, why am I questioning my revisit?
I personally feel I’ve taken some of my best photos in this location, photos that will be hard for me to improve on. It’s not the biggest of locations and while there is a lot to shoot there you are limited to things to shoot. There are some very good well-photographed compositions, all that I took on my last visit, and I think I’ll find it very hard to better on my next visit.
“Evolution” is a good example. It’s a composition that’s been seen before and will be taken many more times, I’m sure I’ll be shooting the same view next week sometime. It’s a composition that needs something to stand out from every other photo that’s taken there and I was lucky with the family walking through the way they did. I’m not going to see the same this time and I doubt there’s anything I can see reflecting in the pool that will work as well?
I think not, yet who knows, I wasn’t planning on seeing evolution take place last time.
“The City” requires the water to be perfectly still to get the reflection. It’s a photo that needs the reflection in my opinion. Will I be as lucky and have still water on my revisit, and even if I am I’ll end up with the same photo. I don’t want the same, I want better or something different.
Managing to find a puddle after some rare Spanish rain right in front of some BMX riders was another opportunity to get some unique photos from this location. Photos that I feel will be hard to beat when I’m there next week.
So why am I revisiting?
Why do any of us revisit locations?
Landscape photographers will still hike up a mountain for sunrise time and time again for the same view. Trenching through damp woodland taking photos of trees they have taken before. Looking for something new or different or just doing what they are comfortable with. The amount of photos I have of The Shard is getting silly, yet all are different and it’s a photogenic building that’s very hard to miss.
I’m going back to The City of Arts And Sciences, as it’s such an amazing location for architectural photography. I’ll enjoy taking the photos and who knows I may find my new Evolution. There is also more to the city than this one area. Hopefully this time around I’ll get to get out a bit and see more of Valencia. There are a few locations I hope to get to that I didn’t last time. I’ll be sure to add another post after the trip showing how different or samey my revisit was.
